One of the biggest concerns for homeowners is dealing with dampness or water seepage in their basement. It’s not a lovely sight and, when ignored for too long, can lead to structural damage. However, there is a solution to this problem, and it lies in the effective application of basement tanking systems.

Emphasis on effective application is needed because while it’s simple to install one, the key to efficiency in basement tanking is continued maintenance and proper maintenance. So, read on to understand the basics of basement tanking and how to improve the system for better property protection.

    How Does Basement Tanking Work?

To understand how this system works, you need to understand its goal – to protect your internal structure from external moisture. Basically, a basement tanking system is necessary for protecting your basement or cellar from issues such as dampness and water infiltration, both of which lead to structural damage.

The system involves the application of a waterproofing membrane or coating the walls and floor of the basement. Doing so creates a barrier between the basement and external moisture, preventing water penetration and dampness. Basement tanking is therefore essential for maintaining a dry and habitable space free from the effects of water penetration, especially mould and mildew.

Key Maintenance for Long Lasting Basement Tanking System

As earlier stated, basement tanking involves the application of a waterproofing membrane; hence, effective maintenance of the system will include steps to improve the waterproofing membrane. In other words, you need to complement the waterproofing membrane with other treatments that will ensure the protection and proper functioning of the system.

There are a few tips to take from here that will ensure your basement tanking system lasts as long as possible.

    1. Ensure Proper Cavity Drainage

A cavity drainage isn’t always installed alongside the basement tanking, but in areas where high flooding is a real concern, it’s advised to install a cavity drainage. It’s a network of water channels and drainage pipes that collect and redirect water away from the basement.

Like any drainage system, the cavity drainage should be monitored to ensure continuous and free flow of water away from the building. That includes checking for leaks and blockages.

    2. Sump Pump Care

The sump pump is sometimes integrated into basement tanking for enhanced functioning. It’s there to collect water from the sump pit and discharge it outside the building. It’s a tool that ensures your drainage works well and keeps the flow of water away from your basement.

To keep this going, you need to inspect the sump pump regularly for debris that could cause blockage. Leaks and cracks should also be checked for and repaired immediately.

    3. Careful Attention to Plumbing Systems

First, during the process, any existing plumbing system and the new ones to be installed should be carefully looked at to ensure seamless compatibility with the basement tanking system. Also, after the installation process, the plumbing system should be checked regularly by professionals for possible leaks and cracks.

That will ensure that the pipes are in check and also reduce the possibility of water damage.

    Wrapping Up

The key to efficient basement tanking lies in the maintenance attached to it. It’s not enough to install the system and call it a night; conscious effort should be made to keep the system in check, and in all cases, you should keep in touch with your basement tanking contractor for improved maintenance.
