Yet it might freak out as a newbie a bit but getting ready is how you nail a hike that’s both fun and smooth. Stick to some simple safety instructions, and you’re bound to have a trip that’s both enjoyable and glitch-free. Check out these 10 must-know tips on safety for all you first-timers ready to hit the trails.

    1. Get Your Hike Together

    Before you charge down a path take a second to figure out the hike. Be savvy about stuff like how tough the trail is, how long and far it goes, and what kind of ground you’ll be stomping over. Pick one that’s up your alley in terms of how fit you are and what you’ve done before. Always check at the latest conditions or if the trail’s shut and tell someone your scheme.

    2. Sport the Right Outfit

    Picking out the right outfit is super important for a hike that’s both comfy and safe. Choose tough hiking boots that feel good on your feet and support your ankles. It’s smart to wear clothes that keep you dry, and you can’t go without a cap, shades, and sunblock. Don’t leave without a backpack loaded with stuff you’ll need, like water, munchies, and a first aid box.

    3. Drink Lots of Water

    You might get dehydrated quicker than you think if the hike’s a long one. Always bring plenty of water and take a little drink now and then. Planning to be out there for a while? Look into places where you can refill your bottle and pack a water cleaner just in case.

    4. Know the Weather Forecast

    While navigating the wild, one must bear in mind that the weather can be extremely unpredictable. It is therefore advisable to check the weather conditions before setting off on the hike. Determining the likelihood of rain, snow, or even a change in the temperature range can significantly impact your safety and hiking experience. If there are indications on the forecast for bad weather like thunderstorms, wind storms, or over-excessive heat, then it is better to shift the hike to another calmer day or try and take a different route. Once the day of the hike comes, do not forget to observe the sky closely, watch for possible changes, and ensure that you are well protected. Straying away may seem intriguing, but this practice can place you in dire peril. For your safety, make sure to adhere to the set paths so that you are moving in the correct direction. Trained, established paths are almost always free from issues, and following them helps in avoiding potential dangers like ground that is not stable, unseen blocks, or animals.

    6. Take Breaks and Pace Yourself

    It may be very tempting for you when going for a new outdoor hike to overexert yourself and go all out, but make sure you don’t get overly exhausted or injured. Understand your body during the hike because hiking is not easy at all, especially if the terrain is new to you. Additionally, try making noise, talking, clapping, or ringing a bell as these things can be used to alert animals of your presence. Naturally, animals tend to move away before you get too close. Always, without exception, follow the wildlife security protocols outlined by the park or the hiking trail. Remember, you need to respect wildlife from a distance and safety needs to take precedence at all times.

    8. Pack a First Aid Kit

    It is sad, but true that accidents and light injuries form part of the reality for every outdoor activity, so it is prudent to ensure that a first aid kit is included in your packing list. At the bare minimum, an adequate first aid kit should include several bandages, antiseptic wipes, some gauze pads, pain relievers,a tourniquet, adhesive tape, as well as any personal medications that might be useful. Furthermore, it is important to provide for some specific injuries like a blister treatment and even an emergency whistle. In addition, you might benefit from basic medical training in case more serious troubles arise.
