The Internet has become a vital part of daily life for each of us. So, we now live in a world where we have unlimited access to a wealth of information and can contact relatives or unknown people all over the world without ever leaving our homes. IP addressing is one of the key technоlogies that enable the Internet to function as it does. So, what does IP stand for, and why are IP addresses so vital to network operations?

What is an IP address? How to Check It?

Describing the meaning of IP address, in other words the Internet Protocol address, we may say that it is a unique identifier. It is used to communicate between devices on the Internet. That is, when you visit a website or receive a message, your device interacts with the Internet through the Network address. It is a numerical code. The last one allows you to identify a device on the network. If you want to know what an IP address looks like, consider that it is an address that consists of numbers and dots. They come in the format of four blocks of numbers from 0 to 255.

An IP address allows Internet services to find a specific device to which a request is sent. It can be a computer or a smartphone. Internet Protocol provides a way to identify where a particular request or data packet should be sent. Thus, IP stands for Internet Protocol and this protocol regulates the transfer of information between different networks.

    How to Check?

Users often want to know their Network address. For example, to solve technical issues or to configure the Internet. The question of how to check my IP address arises among users of MacOS computers in particular. There are several easy ways to get the IP address of a Mac. The easiest way to check it is through the network settings. To get the Mac IP address, you need to go to the System Preferences section and select Network. There, in the Status tab, you will see your current Network address. The described method is convenient for local IP addresses. If you want to get a global IP address, you can use online resources. You can also check your Network address by using special websites that immediately show your external Network address after visiting the page.

Types of IP Addresses. Their Classes

There are two main types of IP addresses. They are private and public.

    • Private ones are used for devices on a local network. In other words, for the network at home or in the office.
    • Public IP addresses allow devices to connect to the global network. This separation provides security by allowing private devices to remain protected from external threats.

Often, users ask whether an IP address is specific to a device. The answer to this question depends on the type of network. To wit,

    • In the case of a private network, the Network address is tied to a specific device.
    • In a public network, dynamic addresses can be used, which change with each connection to the network.

    IP address classes

They are used to allocate address ranges in large networks.

The main classes are A, B, C, D, and E. They differ in the number of devices that can be addressed in each class.

For example, class A can support millions of devices. At the same time, class C is designed for a smaller number of connections.

Therefore, when answering the question of IP address types and IP address classes, we understand that these parameters depend on the needs and size of the network.

IP Configuration. Server IP Address and Website Address

IP configuration is the setting of network parameters to enable your device to communicate with other devices and Internet resources. You can perform the configuration automatically or manually. In particular,

    • Automatically – using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
    • Manually – when the user sets the necessary parameters

DHCP allows the network to automatically assign addresses, simplifying the process of connecting devices. This is especially useful for large networks, where automatic configuration helps avoid address conflicts.

When you access a website, your device actually sends a request to the server IP address to which the website is bound. The server address is unique for each server that stores the site’s data. Each web address corresponds to a specific Network address, which the request is routed to for delivery to the desired page. For example, we can say that website address examples and www.google.com are the same from a technical point of view, but browsers use URLs instead of IP addresses for the convenience of users.

    Summary

IP addressing is the main element of the contemporary Internet. It provides connectivity between devices and allows data to be transferred across the network. Knowing the basics will help every user better understand the processes behind an Internet connection. Imagine how many times a day we send requests to the Internet without even thinking about how complex they are. IP addresses are therefore a vital component of any network, as they ensure reliable data exchange and secure communication between devices around the world.
