    Keeping a home or a business space clean, organized, and welcoming is no small task. Whether it’s a bustling hotel, a cozy bed and breakfast, or a private residence, having a good and reliable housekeeper is an absolute necessity to ensure a clean and comfortable environment.

    With a recent study showing an expected rise in this workforce from 1.02 million in 2022 to 1.53 million in 2026, understanding what this job entails has become increasingly important.

    In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the key responsibilities, necessary skills, qualifications, and career prospects for housekeepers. Whether you’re considering a career in housekeeping or looking to hire a professional, we hope to provide you with all the essential information about a housekeeper job description.

    What do housekeepers do?

    Housekeeping involves the management and upkeep of a property to ensure it remains clean, organized, and well-maintained. This can include residential homes, hotels, offices, and other commercial properties.

    Keeping that in mind, there are typically three types of housekeepers:

    • Domestic Housekeepers who work in private homes, providing personalized cleaning and maintenance services;
    • Hotel Housekeepers who are employed by hotels and resorts to maintain guest rooms, common areas, and facilities;
    • Commercial Housekeepers who clean and maintain office buildings, schools, hospitals, and other commercial properties.

    Key Responsibilities and Duties

    A housekeeper job description covers a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks. Here is a list of the key ones:

    Daily Cleaning Tasks

    • Dusting and polishing furniture, shelves, and other surfaces such as glass or metal to remove dirt and debris;
    • Keeping floors clean by vacuuming carpets, rugs, and upholstery, and sweeping hard floors;
    • Mopping tile, linoleum, and hardwood floors to remove stains, spills, and dirt;
    • Scrubbing and disinfecting toilets, showers, bathtubs, sinks, and bathroom floors to maintain hygiene;
    • Wiping down kitchen countertops, cleaning appliances, and sanitizing sinks. Housekeepers may also be tasked with washing dishes or loading the dishwasher.

    Laundry Duties

    • Sorting, washing, and drying clothes and linens;
    • Ironing clothes and linens to remove wrinkles and folding them neatly;
    • Treating and removing stains from fabrics.

    Organization Tasks

    • Ensuring that living spaces are neat and orderly by picking up items, making beds, and organizing personal belongings;
    • Keeping closets organized by arranging clothes and accessories;
    • Ensuring that common areas, kitchens, and bathrooms are clutter-free and well-organized.

    Inventory Management

    • Keeping track of cleaning supplies and household items, ensuring they are stocked and available when needed;
    • Notifying the employer when supplies are low and restocking items as necessary;
    • Ensuring that cleaning equipment is in good working condition and arranging for repairs or replacements when necessary.

    As you can see, there’s a wide range of responsibilities and tasks a housekeeper has to perform. The tasks will also slightly differ depending on the premises that are being cleaned. For instance, if it’s a business space, laundry duties are most likely not going to be included.

    Housekeepers may also sometimes do specialized cleanings, usually known as ‘deep cleanings’. These tasks involve:

    • Performing more intensive cleaning tasks such as cleaning under furniture, washing windows, and cleaning behind appliances;
    • Completing tasks that are done less frequently, such as cleaning out closets, washing curtains, and deep-cleaning carpets;
    • Handling specialized tasks like carpet shampooing, window washing, and furniture steam cleaning.

    Additionally, some housekeepers may be responsible for grocery shopping, running errands, or other household tasks. If the employer has pets, housekeepers might be tasked with feeding, walking, or grooming them. In some cases, preparing meals or assisting with meal preparation, might also be required.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Some of the key skills and qualifications needed to work as a housekeeper are typically:

    • Education and Training: While a high school diploma is often preferred, it is not always required for housekeepers. Most employers prioritize experience and skills over formal education. Housekeepers also often receive on-the-job training to learn the specific cleaning procedures and standards of their employer. This training may cover the use of cleaning equipment, safety protocols, and best practices.
    • Attention to Detail: Housekeepers should be able to notice and address all of the small details that others might overlook and ensure that the space is truly clean.
    • Time Management: Effective time management is crucial for housekeepers to complete all tasks within a set timeframe. This involves planning and prioritizing duties to maximize efficiency.
    • Physical Endurance: The job can be physically demanding, requiring housekeepers to stand, bend, lift, and carry items for extended periods. Physical stamina is essential to handling the workload.

    Salary and Benefits

    The average salary for housekeepers varies based on location, experience, and type of employer. According to recent data, housekeepers in the United States earn an average annual salary of $33,933, or $16 per hour.

    Housekeepers may receive additional benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and, in some cases, room and board for live-in positions.

    Career Progression Opportunities

    Experienced housekeepers can advance to supervisory or managerial roles, such as housekeeping supervisor or executive housekeeper. These positions involve overseeing cleaning staff, managing schedules, and ensuring that cleaning standards are met.

    Housekeepers can also transition into related fields such as property management, facility maintenance, or hospitality management. These roles often require additional training or education but offer a higher salary.

    Conclusion

    Housekeepers are the backbone of a clean and organized home or establishment. Their attention to detail and dedication to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and order are invaluable to their employers. By understanding the diverse responsibilities and duties of a housekeeper, one can appreciate the hard work and commitment that go into this role.
